Ever since I was young, I have asked myself about the origin of everything and what it all means, avoiding at all costs remaining only on the surface. I enjoy exploring ideas with philosophical themes, like metaphysics and epistemology; the divine and the ethereal are characteristics found throughout my series.
Growing up in Monterrey in the early 80s, a conservative, closed society, I saw that being an artist could be narrowly viewed as an act of rebellion. That reality drove me to Europe, following my paternal roots. I continued developing myself as a self-taught artist, exploiting references to art history and retaking some of its most emblematic icons to create new paintings with hints of irony, sarcasm, and a sense of humor. This was an important aspect at the beginning of my career in that I am aware that I am a dissident artist.
For me, the poetic use of symbols in my pieces is very important. Through them I am interested in exploring mysticism and themes that are related to magic; in hidden languages and therianthropy. On some level I shared these interests with various artists of my generation. Currently the aesthetic I seek in my paintings is different and more conceptual. For example, in one of my most ambitious projects, the one that has undoubtedly shaped my career: Poltronas, 2003-2015; I strive to make an analogy of a portrait of a human being.
My Poltronas are people who hide their real selves under fabrics, just like we do in real life. In this series, I am also alluding to that which covers a void, like in a magic act when the magician lifts the cloth and reveals nothing; how do you depict a human soul if it is invisible? My Poltronas are ethereal thrones that invoke my origins and where our true essence lies.
